Frequently Asked Questions

What does my £39 pay for?
The £39 per month provides everything for your student whilst they are at NVI. This includes food, accommodation, education, clothing, health care, as well as paying for placement in a business or organisation towards the end of the course. As a result of this sponsorship your student will gain much needed experience and training in a chosen skill and over 90% of students go on to full time employment on completion.

Be assured that all money in the UgandAid Scheme (including gift aid returns) is exclusively used :

  1. to sponsor more students
  2. to ‘buffer’ a certain number of students at the start of each year in the expectation of finding them a sponsor during the year
  3. to cover minimal costs for stationery, postage ad computer supplies

While the exchange rate fluctuation is beneficial we are able to sponsor more children at NVI. Exchange rate movements are regularly monitored and an assessment made of future negative exchange rate fluctuations, to ensure that UgandAid always holds adequate funds to meet the full ongoing costs of our sponsored students.

How long does my sponsorship last?
Most of the students' courses last for 3 years at NVI. This money supports the whole process from selection through to a comprehensive follow up programme (which goes well beyond the study period) and equipping students with appropriate tools for their future work. Hopefully this will not cause any problems to anyone, but as with all aspects of UgandAid please feel free to get in touch with any queries.

What if I cannot continue to pay my sponsorship due to unforeseen circumstances?
We encourage sponsors to keep up payments for the full 3 years. However, if it becomes unsuitable to continue please contact the UgandAid Co-ordinator as soon as possible. We may well be able to come up with alternative arrangement for that student’s sponsorship.

Are all the students at NVI sponsored through UgandAid?
No, UgandAid is a relatively new organisation, and there are other supporters of NVI. The Institute’s founding organisation still funds a certain number of places and there are a few students sponsored by other means. However NVI still has capacity to take more students and is looking for as many sponsors as possible.

Am I able to communicate with the student I’m sponsoring?
Yes, we would strongly encourage you to write to the person you are sponsoring. This will help them develop communication skills as well as help them learn more about our country. The main language taught in Uganda is English so there should be no problem regarding translation.

Will my student write to me?
They will be encouraged to enter in to correspondence with you, though this is not compulsory.

Would I be able to visit my student?
It may be possible for you to visit the person you sponsor. If you wish to do so, contact the UgandAid Co-ordinator. You may wish to visit Uganda as part of a team, and this can be arranged. However, if you are visiting Uganda anyway and wish to see your student at NVI we can make the arrangements if we have plenty of notice.

UgandAid appears to be linked with Altrincham Baptist Church – does any of my money go to the church?
Although UgandAid is linked with Altrincham Baptist Church and administered by members of the church, it functions separately. A ring-fenced independent church account is used for UgandAid and we are able to use the church's charity status to reclaim tax from gift-aided contributions. All reclaimed tax from UgandAid contributions stays within the UgandAid scheme and does not go into the general church receipts.
