UgandAid News
What's happening at NVI in 2008?New Student intake - February 2008In early February this year 50 new students were admitted into NVI on the UgandAid programme. This is the largest intake since UgandAid started in 2002. The new students include 13 mechanics including our first female on that course. The mechanics facility has become well established, and thanks to a kind donation by Mitchells group we were able to hand over 30 sets of brand new text books for the mechanics course. The UgandAid team had the privilege of meeting all the new students as they settled into their new surroundings. This is a daunting but very exciting time for all the students, as they arrive at the gates with a small tin trunk and a bedroll. Since UgandAid started 241 students have been placed at NVI. This represents 241 lives turned around and 241 families impacted for good, thanks to the generosity of sponsors in the UK and elsewhere. NVI Director visits the UK Benon Kwikiriza , the Director of NVI, visited England from 24th April to 12th May. The visit was to help build on the relationship between UgandAid UK and NVI, and for Benon to pass on first hand his experience to a wider audience of the impact vocational training has on vulnerable young people. Benon spoke in various places and inspired great enthusiasm and support. There was evening to celebrate all that UgandAid is doing May 10th in Altrincham. About 90 people attended, and it was a great time to hear more about UgandAid and the young people it supports. Our thanks to Benon for taking time to come to the UK to share his thoughts and visions.
Previous years - 2007The mechanics training facility On February 16th 2007 the grand opening ceremony took place of the completed training facility. 120 guests were present at this momentous occasion for Nile Vocational Institute, which has waited a long time to introduce this vital training to its range of courses. Tools and equipment arrived from Draper in the UK the very next day. 15 more students started mechanics training in February. see mechanics training facility for more information and photos of the emotional opening ceremony. Jinja Nile Marching Band at the celebrations In February 2007 the UgandAid team also did some school refurbishment...............Narambhai Primary School in Jinja has been known to us for some time. It has a link with The Firs primary School in Sale, one of six schools linked with Jinja schools throught the Trafford Jinja Association. Building maintenance is almost impossible for Narambhai as with many Ugandan schools as the funding is just not available. So, our 2007 team set about renovation of one classroom for the youngest children at Narambhai. Hopefully the photos tell the tale............
2006 Bicycle ambulances for villages In January2006 20 bicycle ambulances were ordered for manufacture at NVI, and were delivered en masse in February, a testimony to the metalwork department who had also been battling with extensive power cuts on a daily basis! Funds for these were raised by Altrincham Baptist Church in the UK, including the fantastic efforts of the children in that church community. In association with Arise Africa, these were distributed to clinics in villages in the Jinja area by the UK team, and later others were delivered to villages in central and eastern Uganda. An article about the donation of Bicylce Ambulances in the web site of 'The New Vison', a leading Ugandan national newspaper (Wednesday 12th April) More about Bicycle Ambulances Blackboards R UsA UK team member in 2005 was so moved to see the struggles of teaching in the village environment that she sent funding for two blackboards (and easels) to be produced for the village of Naminya a few miles from Jinja, These were produced by the carpentry department at NVI, painted with magnetic blackboard paint carried all the way from the UK and delivered to Naminya by some of the UK team. Colourful magnetic letters and numbers had also been sent over to add some fun to the teaching in this desperately needy village community, (a village absolutely overwhelmed by AIDS and HIV.)
