UgandAid in the UKUgandAid is administered by a small group of volunteers from Altrincham Baptist Church in Cheshire. School AssembliesWe are keen to introduce the idea of UgandAid sponsorship to schools. We feel that supporting one young person is a very tangible way in which children can understand the lifestyle and needs of people in another culture. Members of the UgandAid team visit primary schools within a reasonable distance of Greater Manchester to take an assembly, for approximately 30 minutes, looking at various aspects of life in Uganda including homes, family, animals, toys etc. We would introduce the idea of the school ‘adopting’ a student of their own, and try to explain the reality of the cost in everyday terms (bags of crisps per child per year!) We would also help to inspire ideas for fundraising, though so many schools already are brimming with creative energy anyway. We are also happy to consider taking UgandAid into senior schools, using the most appropriate communication methods for the age group in question. For any enquiries about assemblies, contact Christine Booth, admin@ugandaid.com Links we have with schools and collegesSchools who have sponsored through UgandAid include:
Trafford Jinja AssociationUgandAid is a member of the Trafford Jinja Association (TJA) in UK, along with Trafford Council and other Trafford organisations and individuals. The TJA was born out of the developing relationships between Trafford and Jinja residents formed during trips to Uganda that have taken place since 2000. A formal friendship agreement between Trafford MBC and Jinja MC was signed in February 2002, and the aim of the TJA is ‘to guide and support Trafford residents, businesses and other groups and organisations to fulfil the commitment set out in the Trafford Jinja Friendship Agreement’. That is: Purposely to develop friendship to increase mutual learning and support in areas of Environment, Conservation, Tourism, Human Resources, Health, Culture and Education for the benefit of both Communities To this effect, the TJA has already arranged for a Trafford refuse collection wagon to be shipped to Jinja to improve waste disposal in the town. The TJA has also successfully twinned several of schools within the two boroughs, with the aid of funding from the British Council. Exchange visits of teachers from six schools in each borough have already taken place and relationships between the schools are developing rapidly, with Uganda becoming part of curriculum teaching in Trafford. There is a sister organisation, the Jinja Trafford Association, in Jinja.
